While most of us enjoyed the nice weather this week, it was not ideal for fishing: there was rough surf on the south side of the island and high winds on the north side. The S. Tokunaga Store Ulua Challenge ran from June 11 through June 14, weigh-in being from 11:00am until 2:00pm, and it was certainly a challenge for the 501 registered participants to reel in a catch.
Out of those who did manage to secure a fish and get it in to the scales, Randy Duldulao took first place in the omilu division with an 18.7 pounder. He was followed by James Ku with a 17.1 pounder and Vic Llanes close behind with a 16.9 pounder. In the ulua division, Bruce Blythe took first with a 89.8 pounder. Bruce squeaked out his win by one tenth of a pound over Duane Fukumoto, who brought in a 89.7 pounder. Third place was taken by Scotty Burns with an 80.7 pounder. The Tournament Queen Sonja Soun graced the weigh-in area and posed for pictures as each contestant brought in their fish.
While the fishing may have be hard, the turnout of spectators more than made up for it, with Aunty Sally’s Luau Hale seeing standing room only during the awards announcements. There were many happy lucky number winners, as well as awards for the top ten placers in the omilu and ulua divisions. Many custom poles, reels, bags, gift certificates, and more were handed out to the winners. In spite of the heat and humidity, a great time was had by all who attended.

The first tropical depression of the eastern Pacific Ocean season is making landfall in Mexico and has drenched the state of Sinaloa already.
On June 19, as Tropical Depression One-E (“E” for Eastern Pacific) was trudging into western Mexico, and the state of Sinaloa, it was dropping between 4 and 8 inches of rain, with higher amounts in isolated areas. Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect.
At 11:00 a.m. EDT the center of Tropical Depression One-E (TD1-E) was located near latitude 21.0 north and longitude 107.1 west or about 160 miles south-southwest of Mazatlan, Mexico.

The depression is moving toward the north-northeast near 10 mph and will gradually turn north while slowing down. TD1-E’s center will be near Las Islas Marias today and near the mainland coast of Mexico on June 20. Its current forecast track brings the center of TD1-E between the towns of Culacan and Mazatlan.
Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph with higher gusts. There is still a possibility that the depression could become a tropical storm later on June 19. Estimated minimum central pressure is 1003 millibars.
The Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) instrument on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured an infrared image of the low pressure area on June 19 at 4:35 p.m. EDT (8:35 UTC. In the infrared image, TD1-E’s cold clouds (in purple) resemble a tight almost perfect circle. It is located right next to the western Mexican coast. The storm’s lowest temperatures (in purple) are associated with high, cold cloud tops. Those temperatures are as cold as or colder than 220 degrees Kelvin or minus 63 degrees Fahrenheit (F). The blue areas are around 240 degrees Kelvin, or minus 27F.
What’s that Other Huge Area of Cold Clouds?
The other huge rounded area of purple and blue (high clouds) over the Mexico/Texas border is a mesoscale convective complex (MCC). In an MCC, the area of cold cloud tops exceeds 39,000 square miles with temperatures less than or equal to −32 °C (−25.6 °F); and an area of cloud top of 19,000 square miles with temperature less than or equal to −52 °C (−61.6 °F). They must maintain that size for more than six hours to be considered an MCC, and they’re long-lived, form at night (or early morning, pre-dawn) and have heavy rainfall, wind, hail, lightning and possibly tornadoes. This AIRS image shows that the core area has temperatures colder than -76F (-60 C). So, that other system isn’t a tropical depression, it’s an MCC.
— The Central Pacific Hurricane Center (CPHC) issues tropical cyclone warnings, watches, advisories, discussions, and statements for all tropical cyclones in the Central Pacific from 140 Degrees West Longitude to the International Dateline. The season officially begins on June 1 and ends on November 30. However, tropical cyclones can occur at any time. The National Weather Service Forecast Office in Honolulu activates the CPHC when: (1) a tropical cyclone moves into the Central Pacific from the Eastern Pacific, (2) a tropical cyclone forms in the Central Pacific, or (3) a tropical cyclone moves into the Central Pacific from the West.
Dealing with a disease is never easy, but when it’s your child and it’s cancer, that’s a whole other ballgame. Clayton and Pauline Morante found out in May, right after Mothers’ Day, that their second son Clayson has Non-Hodgkin’s T-cell Lymphoma. While this was devastating news for the family, they are holding strong and doing what needs to be done to beat this challenge. Clayson is undergoing a six-month course of chemotherapy and will be on oral medications for up to three years, but his prognosis is very good. However, none of this is cheap, and that’s where the community has come into play…. literally.
A benefit volleyball tournament has been put on at the armory, with the team entry fees going to help the Morantes. Twenty-eight teams participated, and in fact there were so many teams wanted to get involved that some teams had to be turned away. There have also been numerous donations, of time, money, and prizes to help make the tournament a success. The majority of the team players are from the Big Island, but there are some off-islanders as well. The teams are also comprised of a wonderful assortment of people. There are players from the West side, there are players from the North side, there are players from the East side, and there are even a few players from the South side. There were teams of youngsters, teams of adults, and teams of generous mixing of both. There were even some teams that were an entire family, from little ones up to their grandparents. A strong showing of support given to a good family in their time of need.

Hawaii Department of Health warns consumers not to eat Nestle Toll House cookie dough because of possible health risk
HONOLULU –The Hawai‘i State Department of Health (DOH) is warning consumers not to eat any varieties of prepackaged Nestle Toll House refrigerated cookie dough due to the risk of contamination with E. coli O157:H7 (a bacterium that causes food borne illness).
The DOH advises that if consumers have any prepackaged, refrigerated Nestle Toll House cookie dough products in their home that they throw them away. Cooking the dough is not recommended because consumers might get the bacteria on their hands and on other cooking surfaces.
The warning is based on an ongoing epidemiological investigation conducted by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and multiple state and local health departments. Since March 2009 there have been 66 reports of illness across 28 states. Twenty-five persons were hospitalized; 7 with a severe complication called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). No one has died.
Hawai‘i has identified 1 case of E. coli O157:H7 that is associated with this outbreak. However, final confirmation of definitive match to the outbreak strain is pending from CDC.
E. coli O157:H7 causes abdominal cramping, vomiting, and a diarrheal illness, often with bloody stools. Most healthy adults can recover completely within a week. Young children and the elderly are at highest risk for developing HUS, which can lead to serious kidney damage and even death.
Individuals who have recently eaten prepackaged, refrigerated Toll House cookie dough and have experienced any of these symptoms should contact their doctor or health care provider immediately.

(SOLON, Ohio) – June 19th, 2009 – Nestlé USA’s Baking Division is initiating a voluntary recall of Nestlé® TOLL HOUSE® refrigerated cookie dough products. Nestlé is taking this action out of an abundance of caution after being notified that the Food and Drug Administration, together with the Centers for Disease Control, are conducting an investigation into reported E. coli 0157:H7 illnesses that may be related to consumption of raw cookie dough.
A number of consumers reporting illness reported consuming raw Nestlé TOLL HOUSE refrigerated cookie dough. While the E. coli strain implicated in this investigation has not been detected in our product, the health and safety of our consumers is paramount so we are initiating this voluntary recall. We have been and will continue to cooperate fully with the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control in this investigation. Providing safe, high quality products to our consumers is our number one priority.
No other Nestlé TOLL HOUSE products are impacted, including already baked TOLL HOUSE cookies purchased outside the home, all varieties of Nestlé TOLL HOUSE morsels, chocolate baking bars, or cocoa, and Dreyer’s and Edy’s ice cream products with Nestlé TOLL HOUSE cookie dough ingredients.
We want to strongly advise consumers that raw cookie dough should not be eaten. This message also appears prominently on our packaging. Nestlé TOLL HOUSE cookies made from refrigerated dough are safe to consume when baked as directed on the package.
Consumers who have purchased these products should not consume them. Instead, we are asking that consumers return these products to their local grocer for a full refund.
